Here’s what the distributor says about their film: “Over the course of a single day in New York City, two teenagers who have nothing in common randomly meet and fall in love. Natasha is a practical young woman trying to keep her family from being deported in a matter of hours. Daniel is a poet at heart, but on this day he is dutifully making good on his familial commitment to a college interview. The two are inexplicably drawn to each other and somehow their paths keep converging. The Sun is Also a Star is a thought-provoking story of possibility, fate, and the illogical beauty of love.

This film is based on the best-selling young adult novel of the same name written by Nicola Yoon about a teenager who finds love at a difficult time in her family’s life.

Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?”

Secular Movie Critics
…so-so… The driving engine behind the film—a whirlwind 24-hour romance—is contrived, underwhelming and perhaps worst of all, unconvincing…
Lindsey Bahr, The Associated Press
…if you’re waiting for that heartbeat-skipping moment that big screen romances have to deliver to come off, don’t bother your cardiologist. “The Sun is Also a Star” can’t deliver one…
Roger Moore, Movie Nation
…It’s all quite wistfully romantic,… despite the sometimes wise-way-beyond-their-years dialogue and not always plausible plot…
Moira Macdonald, The Seattle Times
…A teen romance that never catches fire… As talented as Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton are individually, they don’t have much chemistry…
Caryn James, The Hollywood Reporter
…This is a movie that talks endlessly about emotion but displays none of it—and the same can be said for all that destiny chatter…
Oliver Jones, Observer (NYC)
…silly, pretty YA romance… The leads are both charming, but they can’t override the…cardboard conflicts that propel it… too much silliness to ever really shine… [C]
Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly
…creates a heady, knee-buckling mood that nearly conceals the weaknesses in story and performances…
