What is…
covetousness

also known as: coveting, greed, greediness

a very strong desire for the possession of worldly things

Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality [fornication], impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which [c]amounts to idolatry. —Colossians 3:5 NASB

Col. 3:5; Ephesians 5:5; Hebrews 13:5; 1 Timothy 6:9-10; Matthew 6:20)

Coveting sometimes assumes a more heinous form called “avarice” (insatiable coveting/hoarding greed) which is a mark of cold-hearted worldliness.

The Ten Commandments include God’s command that,

You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, and you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field or his male servant or his female servant, his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor. —Deuteronomy 5:21 NASB
