Zanoah

Hebrew: זָנוֹחַ —transliteration: Zanowach —meaning: rejected

This is the name of 2 biblical towns.

  1. Zanoah of the lowlands of the Tribe of Judah

This town in the low country (Shephelah, Shefelah) of Judah, was near Zorah (Joshua 15:34).

It was re-occupied after the the Judean return from the Captivity (Neh. 11:30).

Zanu'ah in Wady Ismail, 10 miles west of Jerusalem, occupies probably the same site.

  2. Zanoah in the hill country of Judah

This town is partly in the hill country, partly in the plain of Judah, and was about 10 miles to the southwest of Hebron (Joshua 15:56).

It exists today as Zanoah, Israel (a Jewish village/moshav), adjacent to Beit Shemesh (Bet Shemesh). Nearby is Twins Cave. The modern village was esablished by Yemeni Jewish immigrants in 1950, who were later replaced by Jewish immigrants from Morocco.
