Neutral—Think “Alien”… underwater, instead of in space. LOTS of similarities. Only meh.

Negative
Negative—Saw this movie the day before opening; we couldn’t wait to see it! Wish we waited till it was on television. Most movies on SYFY channel are better than this motion picture. No depth of story, none. No character profiles, you are almost immediately put in the implosion of this mile long deep sea station. The men are clothed, the 2 women are wearing bras and panties when not in their underwater suit. 1 F-bomb, littered throughout with various swear words.

My wife and I are in our 60’s my daughter is 21, I asked them did you like this movie or recommend this movie, both said no…

Secular Movie Critics
…All-wet ‘Alien’ rip-off… I felt frustrated walking out of “Underwater”: Here’s a movie with good production values, a great leading actress, and a fantastic score, yet it gets so lost trying to figure out what story it wanted to tell that it completely forgets to form a connection with the audience. …
Yolanda Machado, TheWrap
…an abyss of unoriginal ideas and muddy visuals… “Underwater” breaks no new ground as a sci-fi horror flick—other than as a possible contender for the murkiest movie ever made…
Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times
…boy is it dumb… drowns in stupidity… the whole premise of “Underwater” is ridiculous. …
Soren Andersen, The Seattle Times
…Underwater is a solid creature feature that isn’t afraid to acknowledge its sub-genre predecessors. Kristen Stewart shines amidst a mostly likable cast, anchoring a film that moves at a relatively brisk clip, particularly in its bombastic opening and closing sequences. …
Joe Lipsett, Consequence of Sound
…as incomprehensible an action movie as I’ve ever seen in theaters… truly ugly horror film… Whenever Norah and company set foot outside the station, the action becomes a Vaseline blur of dimness and debris… [2/5]
Matthew Monagle, Austin Chronicle
…Trashy sci-fi horror… The only reason I wanted to see it at all is Kristen Stewart, but she is so wasted that she should have stayed in bed. …the movie is so dark you seldom know where the actors are, what they’re doing, or where they’re going (which makes for some very tedious viewing indeed). …horrible musical score…
Rex Reed, The New York Observer
…it never transcends its derivative origins and basic thrills. It’s another movie about thin characters and bland monsters—albeit one that’s better than the norm. …
Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, The A.V. Club
…“Underwater” is a stupefying entertainment in which every claustrophobic space and apocalyptic crash of water registers as a slick visual trigger, yet it’s all built on top of a dramatic void. It’s boredom in Sensurround. …
Owen Gleiberman, Variety
…silly monster movie… What frustrates me most about “Underwater” is just how very little it brings to the table. It’s a solid, competently directed regurgitation of an oft-told tale that never manages to justify its own existence… [2/5]
