Puah

Meaning: splendid

This was the name of a biblical woman and a man.

1. Puah, one of the two midwives who feared God, and refused to kill the Hebrew male children at their birth (Exodus 1:15-21)

   Jewish tradition says that Puah was Miriam, the older sister of Moses and Aaron, and that the other midwife (Shiphrah/Shifra) was her mother Jochebed (Yocheved).

2. Puah, a male descendant of Issachar (Judges 10:1)
