He is the elder of the twin sons of Judah (Nehemiah 11:4). His mother was Judah's daughter-in-law, Tamar. Pharez was conceived as part of a deception to fulfill her legal right to bare a child (Genesis 38:29; 46:12). His twin brother is Zerah.

Now it happened at the time she was giving birth, that behold, there were twins in her womb. And it happened, while she was giving birth, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.”

And then it happened, as he drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out. So she said, “What a breach you have made for yourself” So he was named Perez. —Genesis 38:27

His descendants are called Pharzites in Numbers 26:20 KJV and Parzites in Numbers 26:20 NKJV. They are called Perezites in Numbers 26:20 NASB, LSB, ESV.

“The chief of all the captains of the host” was of the children of Perez (1 Chronicles 27:3; Matthew 1:3).

468 of his “sons” (descendants) came back from captivity with Zerubbabel, who himself was one of them (1 Chronicles 9:4; Neh. 11:6).

From him the royal line of David sprang (Ruth 4:12, 18-22), both through Mary and Joseph. He is listed in the genealogy of Jesus Christ in Matthew 1:3 and Luke 3:33.
