Puah

Meaning: splendid

This is the name of a biblical woman and a man.

Puah, the woman

Puah is one of the two midwives who feared God, and refused to kill the Hebrew male children at their birth as commanded by the Pharaoh of Egypt (Exodus 1:15-21).

Jewish tradition says that Puah was Miriam, the older sister of Moses and Aaron, and that the other midwife (Shiphrah/Shifra) was her mother Jochebed (Yocheved).

Puah, the man

He is a descendant of Issachar and is mentioned only once is Scripture. He is the father of the judge Tola.

Then after Abimelech died, Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, arose to save Israel; and he lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. —Judges 10:1
