Timothy L. Clarey

  • Geologist, Creationist
  • Ph.D. in Geology, Western Michigan University, 1996.
  • B.S. in Geology, summa cum laude, Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, Michigan), 1982.
  • M.S. in Geology, University of Wyoming, 1984.
  • M.S. in Hydrogeology, Western Michigan University, 1993.
  • He has published both in conventional geologic literature (e.g., papers on Rocky Mountain structure and stratigraphy) and extensively in creationist publications.

Career

  • 1984–1992: Exploration geologist at Chevron USA, Inc. He developed oil and gas drilling prospects, analyzed assets and lease purchases, and worked with seismic and well data across parts of the U.S. (including time based in Denver and later Oklahoma City after the Gulf Oil merger).
  • ~1996–2013 (17 years): Full Professor and Chair of Geosciences at Delta College (a public community college) in Michigan. He taught geology, authored two college laboratory manuals, and published on Rocky Mountain geology. During this period he also participated in ICR’s Flood-Activated Sedimentation and Tectonics (FAST) research program.
  • 2013–present: Joined the science staff at the Institute for Creation Research full-time. He advanced to Director of Research. His primary long-term project (the “Column Project”) compiles and analyzes thousands of stratigraphic columns from well logs, outcrops, and seismic data across multiple continents to map sedimentary patterns, pre-Flood geography, and megasequences in support of a global Flood model.
  • Served as Editor of the Creation Research Society Quarterly

Research Focus and Publications

Clarey’s research emphasizes sequence stratigraphy and continental-scale sedimentary patterns that he argues better fit rapid, catastrophic deposition during Noah’s Flood than long-age uniformitarian models. He has worked on catastrophic tectonics (including “superfaults” in the American West), dinosaur fossils in Flood sediments, pre-Flood geography, and post-Flood boundaries.

Notable books include

  • Carved in Stone: Geological Evidence of the Worldwide Flood (ICR)
  • Dinosaurs: Marvels of God’s Design (Master Books)
  • Co-author of the textbook Earth Systems and children’s books (with his wife Reneé) such as the Henry series
  • Contributor to Guide to Dinosaurs and other ICR titles

He has numerous technical papers in creationist journals (Journal of Creation, Creation Research Society Quarterly, International Conference on Creationism proceedings) and some earlier conventional publications on Rocky Mountain geology.
