Here’s what the distributor says about their film: “The film is a coming-of age-drama about finding your voice. It takes place in the worlds of electronic music and the Hollywood nightlife, where an aspiring 23-year-old DJ named Cole (Zac Efron) spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire. All of this changes when he meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James (Wes Bentley) who takes him under his wing.

Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for James’ much younger girlfriend, Sophie (Emily Ratajkowski). With Cole’s forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love, loyalty, and the future he knows he’s destined for.”

Neutral—As much as Zac Efron is big in the movie industry, my opinion, this movie was a bit little league for him.

Movie Critics
…a surprisingly decent look at the EDM generation… [2½/4]
Laura Beeston, The Globe and Mail
…“We Are Your Friends” is the movie “Entourage” should have been… a study in intoxicants: drink, drugs, youth and Emily Ratajkowski. All four are potentially dangerous, yet nearly impossible to leave alone. … [3/4]
Kyle Smith, New York Post
…Fast, fun and feel-good. …“We Are Your Friends” is predictable, sometimes tacky, but the energy is unflagging, the eye candy plentiful …skillfully modulated sweetness…
Jon Frosch, The Hollywood Reporter
…all facile entertainment… clichéd love triangle…
Nicole Herrington, The New York Times
…a moving and authentic portrait of the artist as a young DJ… brashly entertaining but earnestly predictable EDM soap opera…
Justin Chang, Variety
…a mediocre movie with a strong, slightly mixed, pagan worldview and lots of foul language, drug and alcohol abuse, and other immoral content. …
Ted Baehr, Movieguide
…Zac Efron makes a convincing bid for movie stardom — and Ratajkowski proves she’s more than just a pretty face — in this flawed but fitfully entertaining film, even if it all goes a bit Pete Tong at the end. [3/5]
David Hughes, Empire [UK]
…“We Are Your Friends” feels like one of the most strangely upbeat seriously foul movies you’ll ever not really want to see. …
Adam R. Holz, Plugged In
…Cole is compelled to turn and look at any girl he passes in the street or on the dance floor. His ability to swivel his noggin and scan the environment is admirable; unfortunately, it’s also what passes for acting range in this movie. (Also, is there a rule in Hollywood that says Efron has to be filmed showering in at least one scene?)… [1½/4]
Chris Knight, National Post
…falters in plot… despite an able, energetic cast, it proves the point of the childhood pals who believe the best part of anything is the moment before it starts. [2/4}
Barbara Vancheri, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
…it’s a compelling visual and aural experience, and when the soundtrack is going off, almost anything can be forgiven. Unfortunately, it’s when the music stops that the film’s originality does, too.
