Libya in the Bible

also known as: Libia

Hebrew: לוּדִי —transliteration: Ludim —meaning: a tribe descended from Mizraim

Ludim is a son of Mizraim. His descendants are referred to as Ludim. According to the Jewish historian Josephus, the land of the Ludim was in Libya which was west of Egypt near the tribes of Phut in the land of the Moors towards the extreme west of Africa and the Atlantic Ocean. (Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews, book 1.6)

Mizraim became the father of Ludim and Anamim and Lehabim and Naphtuhim —Genesis 10:13

“And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born? Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.” —Acts 2:8-11 NASB

Cyrene was one of Libya’s five prominent cities.
