Who is…
Elisabeth

also known as: Elizabeth

Hebrew: אֱלִישֶׁבַע —transliteration: Elisheba

Greek: Ἐλισάβετ —transliteration: Elisabet

Elisabeth was childless until her husband was visited by an angel of God with a surprising message. She and her husband Zacharias “were both righteous before God” (Luke 1:5).

But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. —Luke 1:13-15 NKJV

She was past normal child-bearing age when she conceived and gave birth. Her son John is better know as the famed and godly John the Baptist (Luke 1:5), the forerunner and herald of the long-sought Messiah.

Elizabeth is a descendant of Aaron, the brother of Moses.

She is a relative of Mary, mother of Jesus. Mary’s visit to Elisabeth is described by the evangelist Luke in Luke 1:39-63.

And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said,

“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.” —Luke 1:41-45 NKJV

Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house. —Luke 1:56 NKJV
