Who is…
Elisheba
also known as: Elisheva
Hebrew: אֱלִישֶׁבַע —transliteration: Elisheva —meaning: God is her oath
Elisheba is a daughter of Amminadab (from the Tribe of Judah) and the wife of Aaron the first High Priest of Israel (Exodus 6:23).
Her marriage to Aaron (from the Tribe of Levi) represented an alliance between the royal/tribal line of Judah and the priestly line of Levi. Her lineage would later produce King David (through her brother Nahshon’s descendants), creating an indirect but symbolically significant link between the priestly and royal lines in Israelite history.
Her brother is Nahshon.
She is the mother of Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar (Exodus 6:23).
Childless Nadab and Abihu were executed by God after offering “unauthorized fire” before the Lord (Leviticus 10:1, 2).
Eleazar and Ithamar continued the priestly line, with Eleazar succeeding Aaron as High Priest.
Elisheba experienced the Egyptian enslavement, the plagues, the Exodus period, the Red Sea crossing, various other miracles, and finally the wilderness wanderings. She was of the generation that was not permitted to enter the Promised Land, dying in the wilderness.
The name Elisheba is the Hebrew precursor to the name Elizabeth (Elisabeth) in the New Testament.
