“Obsession” opens with a man (Bear) attempting to confess his feelings to a close female friend, but instead decides to practice on a waitress first. Lacking much confidence, even with encouragement from his male friend, he soon experiences an unfortunate incident when his cat dies. Later, he receives a phone call from the woman he’s infatuated with (Nikki) and learns that she has lost her crystal necklace.
He then visits a crystal shop in search of a replacement, where he comes across a “Wishing Willow” that supposedly grants one wish to whoever breaks it. He takes it with him, and when he is given the opportunity to confess his feelings, he chickens out. In his desperation, he uses the wishing willow to wish that Nikki would become completely obsessed with him, loving him above all else.
That is the opening of “Obsession.”
The friend group dynamic feels natural and believable. They genuinely come across as friends who spend a lot of time together, making them relatable and helping the story connect with the audience. Kudos to the young actress who plays Nikki. She is impeccable and essentially portrays two very different versions of the same character with remarkable skill. Bear, the lead, also does a good job portraying a man desperate for love and willing to do almost anything to obtain it.
The plot is unique. We often hear stories about unrequited love, obsession, and lust, but this film presents those themes in a convincing and believable way.
However, there is an abundance of objectionable content. I cannot recommend this film because of its content. There is frequent swearing, blasphemy, nudity, sexual content, and other material that makes the film impossible for me to recommend. There simply isn’t enough here that is redeeming.
Finally, I want to address the film’s spiritual element. This movie deals heavily with demonic themes, including wish-granting, crystals and supernatural forces via possession. To the undiscerning viewer, it may simply seem like a story about a man who got more than he bargained for. The film clearly presents demonic influence and uses the wish as the vehicle through which they enter these people’s lives.
Biblically, Christians are warned not to dabble in these things. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 specifically condemns divination, sorcery, witchcraft, and other occult practices, stating that these things are detestable to the Lord. There is no biblical basis for wishing, crystals or seeking supernatural power apart from God. Anything that attempts to imitate God’s authority through occult means is something Christians are called to reject. Our trust belongs in Christ alone.
For those reasons, I cannot recommend “Obsession.” While the acting and premise are well executed, the content and spiritual themes ultimately far outweigh its strengths. There is nothing in this film that I found edifying as a Christian.
My recommendation: avoid it.
Every time you buy a movie ticket or rent a video you are in effect casting a vote telling Hollywood, “I’ll pay for that. That’s what I want.” What enables Hollywood Liberals to continually attack the Bible in movies and present immoral and even abhorent programming? Money. Christian, are YOU part of the problem?
