The Bible talks about human ears in two layers: the physical organ God made, and the “inner ear” that either receives or rejects His word. The second use is far more common. The Bible’s consistent point is simple: ears were made to hear God. The crisis is never that people lack the organ; it is that they will not use it for the One who made it.

Ears as God’s gift

Ears are not an accident.

The hearing ear and the seeing eye, Yahweh has made both of them. —Proverbs 20:12 LSB

He who planted the ear, does He not hear?
He who formed the eye, does He not see? —Psalms 94:9 LSB

Hearing, doing, and walking were all marked as belonging to God

Priest and leper—At Aaron’s consecration, and again when a leper was declared clean, blood (and oil) was put on the tip of the right ear, the right thumb, and the right great toe (Exodus 29:20; Leviticus 8:23–24; 14:14–28).

Spiritual hearing

This is the main biblical theme. Having ears on the side of the head is not enough.

Opened ears or heavy ears—God “opens” the ear so a person can understand and obey (Isaiah 50:4–5; Job 36:10). Rebellious people have “heavy,” “dull,” or “uncircumcised” ears (Isaiah 6:9–10; Jeremiah 6:10; Acts 7:51). Moses told the Israelites that to that day the Lord had not given them “ears to hear” (Deuteronomy 29:4). Jesus quotes Isaiah when he explains why he teaches in parables: they hear but do not understand (Matthew 13:13–15).

“He that hath ears to hear, let him hear”—Jesus uses this phrase after His parables (Matthew 11:15; 13:9, 43; Mark 4:9, 23; Luke 8:8; 14:35).

Revelation repeats it to each of the 7 churches: “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” Physical ears are assumed; the call is for a heart that receives.

Faith and the Word—“Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). Jesus’ sheep “hear my voice” and follow (John 10:27). Isaiah 30:21 pictures guidance: “your ears will hear a word behind you, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right or to the left.”

Warnings—People can “stop their ears” (Acts 7:57).

They can have “itching ears” that collect teachers to suit their desires (2 Timothy 4:3–4).

Whoever turns his ear from the law—even his prayer is an abomination (Proverbs 28:9).

Whoever shuts his ear to the poor will himself cry and not be heard (Proverbs 21:13).

The servant who did not wish to leave

A Hebrew servant due to go free in the 7th year could choose to stay. His master took him to the doorpost and pierced his ear with an awl; then he served for life (Exodus 21:5–6; Deuteronomy 15:16–17). The ear that hears the master’s voice was fastened to that house.

Psalm 40:6 (“My ears You have opened”) is often read against that background: opened ears mean willing obedience rather than sacrifice.

Hebrews 10:5–7 applies the same psalm to Christ.

Severed ears

When Jesus was arrested, Peter cut off the right ear of Malchus, servant of the high priest Matthew 26:51; Mark 14:47; Luke 22:50–51; John 18:10–11.

Luke records that Jesus touched the ear and healed it. It is Christ’s last healing before the cross.

Cutting off ears is listed among wartime atrocities (Ezekiel 23:25).

Earrings

Earrings appear as ordinary adornment in the Scripture (Genesis 35:4; Exodus 32:2–3; Ezekiel 16:12).

God “hears”

Scripture speaks of God’s ears the same way it speaks of his eyes and hands. “The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry” (Psalm 34:15; 1 Peter 3:12). He also hears the cry of the oppressed (James 5:4) and can refuse to hear when people will not hear him (Isaiah 59:1–2; Ezekiel 8:18).
