Who is…
Abdeel
Meaning: disciplined of El; servant of God
One man by this name is mentioned in the book of Jeremiah. He is a minor biblical figure mentioned only once, although he could possibly have been among the elite in his time and culture.
“But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet: but the LORD hid them.” —Jeremiah 36:26 KJV
Abdeel is the father of Shelemiah, one of 3 officials King Jehoiakim (Kingdom of Judah) ordered to arrest God’s prophet Jeremiah and his scribe Baruch after the king burned Jeremiah’s scroll.
King Jehoiakim was infuriated by Jeremiah’s prophecy of the downfall of Jerusalem, which he saw as treasonous. He had Jeremiah beaten and imprisoned as a result of his warnings about the city's impending destruction due to the people's sinful disobedience to God.
